We will offer the distribution of ashes along with the Rite of Holy Communion on Wednesday, February 17th at 9.30 am (right after the morning Mass online) and at 6 pm.
It will be done in the same manner as Sunday’s reception of Holy Communion and you will need to register online at stclare.ca/special-event-registration with one reservation per family or “bubble”. Please note that all of our reservations open exactly 7 days before the event.
As you enter the church there will be the first station to receive ashes and then you will proceed to the second station to receive Holy Communion.
Please refrain from chatting prior to or afterward but prayerfully go back to your car. This will help all attendees in the church to be in right disposition of mind and heart.
With Ash Wednesday we begin the sacred season of Lent. There are the three disciplines of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we have obligation to fast and abstain from meat.
Catholics from age 18 up through to the beginning of their 60th year (their 59th birthday) are required to fast unless they have a serious reason for not doing so. According to Pope Paul VI’s apostolic constitution Paenitemini, “The law of fasting allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and evening, observing–as far as quantity and quality are concerned–approved local custom.” (Paenitemini, ch. III., III., 2).
Catholics who have reached age 14 are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Notice there is no upper age limit on the requirement to abstain from meat.
